Vacation sketches and why I will stop chasing likes.

Vacation Watercolors

Hi people,

Heres a little of what I’ve been doing and a clue to where I’ve been the last week. It was good to get away from everything and get your mind on other things like walking on the beach and looking for cool stuff that has been washed ashore. I’ve also have been thinking about what I’ve been doing the last year. I realized I’ve was doing my best / creative work when I wasn’t chasing “likes” and doing what I felt came from my inside of me. Now anyone who has stopped by here knows I’m trying to paint a dragon. This just isn’t working, I’ve done studies, I took pictures of friend and relatives posing from me, but it just doesn’t feel right, I can’t explain this any better. Maybe it will come when I’m not trying to force it, but right now I feel the need to do something else. I’m strange that way sometimes, my best ideas and drawing / paintings come when I least expect it.

I realize I’m lucky because I don’t have to rely on my art for my income, I have a day job to pay my bills and put food on the table. I dream of supporting myself and family with my work but being realistic is probably safer and you can go on vacation without worrying about not eating.  So, my motto for the coming year will be- “Stop Chasing Likes.” You’re free to join me.

Stay healthy,

Bill

The Blue Flower

The Blue Flower-web

If you’ve been stopping in here the last few weeks you might have seen sword-stair painting that I’ve been working on. Well, I found out about two weeks ago that our little towns Artist club will be holding a art contest in October and the deadline for submission is end of July. I immediately stopped working on all my paintings and started work on two other painting that I will be entering. The first on is the above painting, The Blue Flower, the second I haven’t even started yet, but hopefully will finish gathering reference and can start next week. After I am finished I’ll get back to what I was working on before.

Dragons- Watercolor sketches

Dragons

On the weekend I didn’t have time to draw or  paint, my oldest son had his birthday and between getting things ready for his birthday party and the weekend chaos, I just didn’t find or make the time. I was able to break out the water colors and sketch a little. Now for me a sketch is when it takes under two hours to complete. The dragon top left was my son’s toy dragon and the bottom one is from imagination, but heavily influenced from Peter Jackson, I guess that comes from watching The Two Towers the night before.

Male Back Study Watercolor-Pastel

Male Study-2 in watercolor and Pastel-web

Here’s another watercolor-pastel-study. Hopefully I’ll have a painting to show next week, I’ll have to paint more and play “Candy-Crush” less. I think I’ll try this on a different kind of paper. The watercolor paper has a great tooth, but it’s almost too porous.

Male Study in Watercolor and Pastel

Male Study in watercolor and Pastel-web

Continuing the Watercolor-Pastel thing this week. I hope to be getting a painting done this week, but then again maybe not. I used a mirror for this one (I wish), I sort of exaggerated on the pectorals though. Some how my stomach doesn’t look like that either, oh well.

The Passion

The Passion-webI know I said last week that I wanted to get back into my main interest, Fantasy and Sci-Fi, but I had started this painting (like so many) and wanted to bring it to an end. Now I like working on drawings and watercolor paints while doing oil paintings because you get a sense that you are getting something done, it’s quick, it’s fun and you have a feeling that you have accomplished something. I paint slow (in Oil), I usually layer my paints and have to wait for them to dry before I paint the next layer, I also don’t have a lot of time, about 2-3 hours a night, most time only 2 hours, if I’m lucky enough to be able to take a nap before painting. I’ve got some fantasy concepts going around my head and I’ve taken resource photos, but I’ve got to get the stuff I started all ready finished first. I wonder if I’m the only one who works like this?

Determination

Determination-web

I wanted to do a watercolor portrait for a while now. I tried to get a look of determination in her face as if she knew what she wanted and how to get it. I’m not finished with the painting yet, I want to add highlights to her hair with white gouache. This was made with watercolors sprayed with fixative and then I went over it in pitt pastel pencils. The finished work can be seen later this week under my available work up above. I’ll be selling this in my Etsy store later this week.

Painting: Venus Rising

Venus Rising-WebI wanted to “really” Paint with my watercolors for a change instead of doing cartoons with them (which is loads of fun). I sat around on the weekend and sketched and sketched scenes trying to figure out what I wanted to paint. I’ve been boning up on my anatomy and figure drawing combined with gestures and I thought of a post on “Muddy Colors” the other week about how Illustrators are not considered artists, I thought “what would Botticelli think about this. I mean “fine art”, illustration and whatever are terms that have arrive in the past couple hundred years to categorize art. I think the most important thing about art is: Do I like it? Does it say something to me? and what do I feel when looking at it.

I draw and paint because I like to,.. Point. The added plus is the fact that I know what I like, a lot of people don’t actually know what they like or can’t put their finger on why they like something.

This watercolor will be auctioned on ebay starting the 12.12.13. Just click on the widget on my home page “At Auction” and you’ll be taken to the ebay auction.

Thanks for stopping in,

Bill

Watercolor Skull Post.

Skull

I have nothing really to post this week so I thought I would re-post this watercolor skull I did  while back (skull-porn). I’m just in the end phases of finishing a Graphite drawing and the oil painting I really can’t show yet because I just haven’t worked on it enough. I think next week I’ll have something to show.

ACME Credit

ACME Credit DeptI heard someone mention somewhere that if they wanted to do them a favor they could free them from a “Military Cryogenics prison in the future,” I thought this was funny and the cartoon came into being. I sort of messed up the wash on the left, but I left it of sort of does look cool, I think. The guys hand looks funky though.

Thanks for taking a look,

Bill
