Painting and drawing reference sites.

If you are anything like me, you don’t have the money to spend on models to get the right pose for your next drawing or painting. Luckily we have the Internet and it’s wealth of resources available to use. Now I’m not saying you should just rip-off any hard working artist of photographer to get your picture, but there are sites and people out there who try to help out. I’m just going to list a few of my favorites here:

The legendary Senshistock from deviantart.

Now  she has been around for a while, but she buts her soul into her poses. You need a pose, gesture or need inspiration on what to draw next, she has got a wealth of poses. She also has links to other deviants (that is what we call ourself at deviantart) who do poses and resource work for stock or reference. All ways give credit or drop her a line when you use her work and link back to your painting or drawing.

On air or Croquis Cafe.

This one has quite a few picture of gestures that are ideal if your doing anatomy studies. Warning the people are all naked for the those people that are uncomfortable with see people how god made them. I’ve used these for paintings before, they have a lot of quality poses. They also state on there site you can use these for any purpose commercial or personal.

Pixabay

Looking for a picture for your next portrait or a picture of an elephant or wasp for reference? This is a good place to look, though you have to watch out because they also have pictures that are not free-to-use. Read the fine print.

Photos4artists

Looking for reference of an old city, country or sea side, this is the place. all the photos are free to use how ever you want to.

Morguefile

Looking for high resolution stock photos for your illustration, comp or design needs? Search morgueFile for free reference images. Yes, they’re all completely free.

So thats it for now, I hope I could help someone. I know one doesn’t all ways have the time to go for a walk with a camera and take your own pictures. And a lot of time the thing being photographed doesn’t always cooperate.

So, take it easy and keep your pencils sharp,

Bill
